Short History of English Language

English is the most widespread language on Earth and it is second only to Mandarin Chinese in the number of people who speak it. English is the national language of UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand. It is one of the two national language of Canada and Ireland. It is an official and semiofficial language in many former and present British possessions such as South Africa, India, and Hong Kong.

English language, West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family that is closely related to the Frisian, German, and Dutch languages. English originated in England.

The earliest forms of English were spoken by the Anglo-Saxons, who settled in England in the 5th century. The Anglo-Saxons were a mix of Germanic tribes from Scandinavia and Germany. They brought with them their own language, which was called old English.

The different periods of the English language:

  • Before English ( prehistory- c. 500AD)
  • old English ( c. 500- c. 1100)
  • middle English (c. 1100- c. 1500)
  • early modern English (c. 1500- c. 1800)
  • late modern English (c. 1800- present)
English is a fascinating language that has evolved over the centuries and today it is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world.
